Gudmar

Gymnema sylvestre

Called the sugar-destroyer in the classical texts, and a standard component of metabolic formulations.

Also known as: Meshashringi, Gurmar, गुड़मार

Traditional use

Leaf used in classical formulations for metabolic complaints. The common name literally means "sugar destroyer", which is also why the marketing temptation here is strong and must be resisted.

Why brands use it

A core metabolic formulation ingredient with its own modest international profile. The name is evocative enough that it does positioning work on a label, which is exactly why the claims wording around it needs care.

Quality and specification

Leaf material. Gymnemic acid content is the usual standardisation marker.

Safety and cautions

Generally well tolerated. May add to blood-sugar-lowering medication; practitioner advice essential for anyone on such medication. Not advised in pregnancy.

Questions we actually get

Before you ask us

Can we use the "sugar destroyer" name in marketing?

As a translation of the traditional name, with care. Presented as a claim about what the product does, no, that crosses into medicinal territory.
