Hibiscus

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

A classical hair herb used in oils and shampoos, with good recognition and very low cost.

Also known as: Japa, Gudhal, जपा

Traditional use

Flower and leaf used in classical hair preparations, traditionally associated with hair strength and conditioning.

Why brands use it

Inexpensive, recognisable and naturally conditioning, which makes it a sensible addition to hair oils and shampoos. Rarely the lead ingredient but a useful supporting one.

Quality and specification

Flower and leaf material. Widely available and inexpensive.

Safety and cautions

Well tolerated topically. Not advised orally in high doses in pregnancy.

Questions we actually get

Before you ask us

Lead ingredient or supporting?

Supporting, in almost all cases. Bhringraj or onion carries the hair story; hibiscus adds conditioning and classical breadth cheaply.

Your idea, made tangible

Formulating with Hibiscus?

Tell us the format and the volume. We will come back with a specification, a per-unit cost and a realistic first-batch date.
