Sandalwood

Santalum album

A classical cooling and aromatic skin ingredient, heavily regulated and heavily substituted.

Also known as: Chandan, चन्दन

Traditional use

Used in classical skincare and in ceremonial contexts for its cooling character and aroma. One of the most culturally resonant ingredients in Indian personal care.

Why brands use it

Strong recognition and premium association, particularly in face creams and massage products. Cost and regulation are the practical constraints.

Quality and specification

Santalum album is a protected species in India with controlled trade. Much commercial "sandalwood" is Australian sandalwood or a synthetic aroma. Be precise on the label about which you are using, this is an area where vague labelling is common and indefensible.

Safety and cautions

Well tolerated topically. Patch testing is sensible as fragrance sensitivity occurs.

Questions we actually get

Before you ask us

Can we just say "sandalwood"?

Only if it is genuinely Santalum album. If you are using Australian sandalwood or a fragrance, say that. Trade in Indian sandalwood is controlled and misdescription is a real risk.

Your idea, made tangible

Formulating with Sandalwood?

Tell us the format and the volume. We will come back with a specification, a per-unit cost and a realistic first-batch date.
