Testing is how a manufacturer — and you — know a product meets its specification rather than merely looks right. But “we test our products” is a claim that can mean a great deal or very little. This article explains which testing categories matter for ayurvedic products, how sampling and specifications fit together, and why no single test tells the whole story.

Testing only means something against a specification

A test result is only useful if there is a specification to compare it to. The specification defines what a good unit looks like; the test checks whether a batch meets it. Without a specification, a certificate is a number with nothing to judge it by. So the first question is not “do you test?” but “what is the specification, and do you test against it?”

The three points where testing happens

Incoming materials. Raw materials and packaging are checked before they enter production. For herbal products this matters especially, because natural materials vary by source and season. Confirming identity and quality on the way in prevents variability flowing into the product.

In process. Checks during production keep the batch within specification as it is made — catching drift early, while it can still be corrected.

Finished product. The completed batch is tested against its specification before release. This is the final gate before your goods are dispatched.

A manufacturer that tests at all three points has a system. One that tests only at the end is checking, but not controlling.

Sampling: why it is done, and its limits

Testing usually examines samples drawn from a batch, not every single unit — testing every unit is often impractical or destructive. Sound sampling makes the sample representative of the batch. This is normal and sensible, but it is worth understanding: a test tells you about the sampled units to a degree of confidence, which is exactly why the surrounding controls matter so much.

Why one test is never enough

A single finished-product certificate reflects one batch at one moment. It says little about the next batch unless the same system produced it. Real assurance comes from the whole picture: a clear specification, incoming checks, in-process control, finished-product testing, and traceability so a problem can be contained. Treat any single document as one piece of evidence, not the verdict.

What to ask

  1. What is the product specification I will be held to?
  2. What do you test on incoming materials?
  3. What in-process checks apply to my dosage form?
  4. What finished-product tests are standard, and do I receive the report?
  5. How do you keep this consistent across batches?

Frequently asked questions

Which tests matter most for my product?

It depends on the product and the standards that apply to it. Rather than fixate on one test, confirm there is a specification and that testing happens on incoming materials, in process and on finished goods.

Is a certificate of analysis enough on its own?

No. It reflects one batch at one time. Combine it with the specification, the testing system behind it, and ideally a sample you assess yourself.

Can every unit be tested?

Usually not — testing often examines representative samples, and some tests are destructive. Good sampling plus strong in-process control is how consistency is maintained across the whole batch.
