“What will it cost?” is the first question most brands ask an ayurvedic manufacturer, and the honest first answer is always “it depends.” That is not evasion — it reflects how manufacturing actually prices. A product is not one price but a stack of variables, and two quotes for “the same” product can differ for perfectly good reasons. This breakdown explains what moves the number, so you can read a quote properly and compare offers like for like.

We deliberately avoid putting figures here. Any number without your exact product behind it would mislead you. What follows is the structure of the cost, which is far more useful than a made-up price.

One-off costs versus recurring costs

The first distinction to hold in your head is between costs you pay once and costs you pay on every order.

  • One-off (set-up) costs can include custom formulation development, trial batches, and artwork or tooling for packaging. You pay these as you establish the product.
  • Recurring (per-order) costs are the unit cost of making and packing each batch, plus testing and dispatch.

A quote that looks expensive may simply be front-loading one-off work you will not repeat. Separating the two tells you the real ongoing cost of the product.

The main drivers of unit cost

Formulation. A standard formulation the manufacturer already makes is cheaper to start than a custom formula that needs development and trials. Complexity in the recipe raises cost.

Dosage form. Tablets, capsules, powders, syrups, oils and balms each have different processing requirements. The form you choose affects both unit cost and minimum order quantity.

Ingredients. Ingredient quality and grade are among the biggest levers. Scarce or seasonal herbs, higher-grade extracts, and standardised actives all cost more than basic alternatives. This is usually where “cheaper” quotes get cheaper — so compare specifications, not just prices.

Order quantity. Many costs are fixed per batch regardless of size. Spreading them over a larger run lowers the per-unit cost, which is why minimum order quantities (MOQs) exist and why bigger orders quote cheaper per unit.

Packaging. Bottles, jars, blisters, cartons, labels and inserts are a real cost line. Premium or custom packaging can rival the product cost itself.

Testing and documentation. The checks and certificates you require add cost and time. More testing is not waste — it is assurance — but it is a line you should see and understand.

Why two quotes differ

When quotes diverge, the reason is almost always one of the above. A lower quote might use a lower ingredient grade, a larger MOQ, simpler packaging, or less testing. None of that is dishonest — but it means the two quotes are not the same product. Before you react to a price, line the specifications up next to each other.

How to compare quotes like for like

  1. Fix the specification first. Same ingredients and grades, same dosage form, same strength.
  2. Match the quantity. Compare at the same order size, since MOQ changes the per-unit figure.
  3. Match the packaging. Compare the same formats and finishes.
  4. Match the testing. Make sure the same checks and certificates are included.
  5. Separate one-off from recurring. Know your true ongoing cost, not just the first invoice.
  6. Read the terms. Payment schedule, what is included, what is extra, and the lead time.

Only once these line up are you comparing like with like. A tidy way to do this is a one-page table: specification, quantity, packaging, testing, one-off cost, per-unit cost and lead time, filled in identically for each supplier.

Common costing mistakes

  • Choosing the lowest number without checking what it buys.
  • Ignoring one-off costs and being surprised by the first invoice.
  • Forgetting packaging and testing in the budget.
  • Comparing quotes drawn at different order quantities.
  • Treating a rushed verbal estimate as a firm price.

Your next step

Write a complete specification, then ask two or three manufacturers to quote against exactly that. Request an itemised breakdown, separate the one-off from the recurring, and compare at the same quantity. You will end up with a clear, defensible view of cost — and a stronger position to negotiate from.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before choosing an ayurvedic company on cost?

Check what the price actually includes — ingredient grade, packaging, testing — and whether one-off costs are separated from per-unit costs. The cheapest headline number is rarely the cheapest product.

What factors affect the cost of working with an ayurvedic company?

Formulation type, dosage form, ingredient quality, order quantity, packaging, and testing and documentation. Order quantity and ingredient grade usually have the largest effect.

What documents or specifications should I request?

An itemised quotation, a product specification sheet, and clarity on which tests and certificates are included. These let you compare offers fairly.

How do MOQ and production timelines vary?

MOQ and lead time shift with dosage form, ingredient availability and workload. Because MOQ directly affects per-unit cost, always compare quotes at the same quantity.

How can I verify I am getting value, not just a low price?

Compare specifications side by side, request a sample, and confirm testing and documentation. Value is the right quality at a fair price, not the lowest figure.
