Aloe Vera

Aloe barbadensis

Three stories in one ingredient, digestion, skin and hair, and the single most versatile product in personal care.

Also known as: Ghritkumari, Kumari, घृतकुमारी

Traditional use

Known as kumari in Ayurveda and used both internally and topically. The inner-leaf gel is the part used.

Why brands use it

One of the two best-selling herbal juices in India and the backbone of several large direct-selling catalogues, precisely because one bottle serves three conversations. Aloe gel is also the most versatile and lowest-cost product in personal care.

Quality and specification

The critical distinction is inner-leaf versus whole-leaf. Whole-leaf material carries aloin, a strong laxative responsible for most of the complaints that have damaged this category's reputation. Decolourised inner-leaf gel costs more and is the correct choice.

Safety and cautions

Inner-leaf gel is well tolerated at labelled doses. Whole-leaf and aloin-containing products act as strong laxatives and are not advised in pregnancy. Topical use is well tolerated; patch testing is sensible.

Questions we actually get

Before you ask us

What is the real difference between inner-leaf and whole-leaf?

Aloin. It sits in the leaf rind and acts as a powerful laxative, which is why cheap whole-leaf juice produces urgent complaints. Inner-leaf, decolourised, avoids that.

Is 99% aloe realistic in a gel?

Yes, with the remainder being the preservative system. A product claiming 100% is either misleading or unpreserved, and unpreserved aloe gel is a microbiological problem.
