Kutki

Picrorhiza kurroa

An intensely bitter classical liver herb, and one of the costlier ingredients in a liver formulation.

Also known as: Katuki, कुटकी

Traditional use

Rhizome used in classical hepatic formulations. Among the most bitter herbs in the Ayurvedic materia medica, and valued precisely for that.

Why brands use it

A formulation ingredient for liver products. Its bitterness is the practical reason liver tablets are film-coated, and the reason liver juices are a harder sell than liver tablets.

Quality and specification

A high-altitude Himalayan species under conservation pressure, insist on cultivated or legally sourced material with documentation. Kutkoside and picroside content are the usual markers.

Safety and cautions

Generally well tolerated in formulation. Not advised in pregnancy. Practitioner advice for anyone with liver disease.
