Almost every hair product is abandoned too early, and almost every hair product that “worked” got credit it did not earn. Both errors come from the same place: the hair cycle is long, and people judge against a timescale that does not exist.
Understanding it properly changes what you expect, what you buy, and when you decide something is not working.
This is information, not medical advice. Patchy hair loss, scaling with hair loss (especially in a child), or a shiny scarred scalp needs a dermatologist, scarring hair loss is permanent.
The three phases
Each hair follicle runs its own independent cycle.
Anagen, the growing phase. This lasts years, commonly quoted as two to six, and it varies by individual and body site. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month.
The length of your anagen phase determines how long your hair can get. Someone whose hair “never grows past the shoulders” usually has a shorter anagen phase, and that is genetic rather than a care problem.
Catagen, the transition. A short phase, a couple of weeks, in which the follicle regresses.
Telogen, the resting phase. Around three months. The hair sits in place, not growing, still attached.
Then it sheds, and a new anagen hair begins underneath.
At any time, most of your follicles are in anagen and a smaller proportion in telogen, which is why shedding is continuous rather than seasonal in an obvious way.
And each follicle is independent, which is why humans do not moult.
The consequence that explains everything
Here is the key fact: a hair that sheds today entered its resting phase about three months ago.
So shedding reflects what was happening to your body roughly two to three months in the past, an illness, a crash diet, a delivery, a surgery, a period of iron deficiency.
Two things follow, and both matter:
1. The cause is usually in the past, not the present. Someone shedding heavily in March should be asked what happened in December. People almost always look for a current explanation and find the wrong one.
2. Correcting something now will not show for months. Fix your ferritin today, and the follicles that have already committed to resting will still shed on schedule. Then new growth has to emerge and become visible, which takes months more.
This is why three months is the honest minimum for judging anything, and why six months is a better assessment point.
The timeline for any intervention
| Time | What is happening |
|---|---|
| Weeks 0–4 | Nothing visible. Follicles already in telogen will shed regardless |
| Weeks 2–8 | Shedding may increase, see below |
| Months 2–3 | Shedding settles; new anagen hairs beginning |
| Months 3–4 | Short new hairs visible at the scalp, the first real sign |
| Months 4–6 | Visible density change begins |
| Months 6–12 | Full effect on density |
So: do not judge at three weeks. Do not switch products at six weeks. Both are the standard behaviour and both guarantee you will never find out whether anything works.
Why it can get worse before it gets better
This surprises people and it is a real, expected phenomenon.
Treatments that push follicles into a new growth cycle do so by first ending the current resting phase, which means those hairs shed sooner than they would have.
With minoxidil this is well recognised and usually occurs in the first few weeks to about two months, settling afterwards. With topical retinoids on the scalp, and after correcting a significant deficiency, something similar can occur.
It is a sign of cycle activity, not of damage, and it is the single most common reason people stop minoxidil in week three, at which point they get neither the shed nor the regrowth.
What to do: expect it, continue, and reassess at three months. If shedding is severe or prolonged beyond a couple of months, see a doctor rather than assuming.
Why testimonials in this category are unreliable
This is worth being direct about, because it explains the entire marketing of hair products.
Three confounds, any one of which produces a false positive:
1. Seasonal shedding is real and self-resolving. The proportion of follicles in telogen varies through the year, with more shedding in some months. So a product started during a shedding peak will appear to work when the peak passes, which it was going to do anyway.
2. Telogen effluvium resolves on its own. The heavy shedding after a fever, delivery, surgery or crash diet typically recovers over six to twelve months. Anything taken during that window inherits the recovery.
3. The timescale hides the attribution. By the time a change is visible, several months have passed and several things have changed.
Which means: “it worked for me” in this category is genuinely unreliable evidence, not because people are lying, but because the condition improves on its own often enough that honest observation produces wrong conclusions.
How to actually judge it
Photographs. Today, in consistent light, of the parting and the hairline. Again at three and six months, in the same light, same position.
Memory is not a comparator and this is the single most useful practical step in the article.
Density, not the drain. Shedding 50–100 hairs a day is normal. The question is whether your scalp is showing more, whether the parting has widened, whether the ponytail is thinner.
The hair pull test, loosely. Running fingers through and finding several hairs each time is different from finding one or two.
Bulb or no bulb. A shed hair has a small pale bulb at the root end. A broken hair does not. If there is no bulb, the problem is breakage, and breakage responds to conditioning and gentler handling, which is a different and faster fix.
Short new hairs. Look for fine, short hairs along the parting at three to four months. This is the earliest genuine sign of regrowth and it is easy to miss.
What the cycle means for different conditions
Telogen effluvium, diffuse shedding, 2–3 months after a trigger. Usually self-resolving over 6–12 months once the cause is addressed. The cycle explains both the delay in onset and the delay in recovery.
Pattern hair loss, a progressive shortening of the anagen phase with each cycle, so hairs get finer and shorter over years until they no longer emerge meaningfully. This is why it is gradual, and why treatment preserves rather than resurrects. A follicle that has finished is not recoverable, which is why starting early matters.
Anagen effluvium, as in chemotherapy, where growing hairs are affected directly. Shedding is rapid rather than delayed, because it does not wait for the cycle.
Alopecia areata, patchy, immune-mediated. Different mechanism, needs a dermatologist.
What to do during those three months
Since you are waiting anyway, these are worth doing:
Get the tests done. Ferritin, TSH, vitamin D, B12, and a PCOS assessment where indicated. Three months of waiting with no diagnosis is three months wasted.
And on ferritin specifically: take the actual number to your doctor rather than accepting “normal”. Hair follicles appear sensitive to iron status well above the bottom of the laboratory range.
Stop biotin before any blood test, high-dose biotin distorts thyroid assays, making TSH look low and T4 high.
Reduce breakage, which is the faster win: no combing wet hair, no tight styles, less heat, oil on the shaft, and gentle handling.
Do not pick products weekly. Starting three things at once means you learn nothing from any of them.
Keep protein adequate at every meal.
And if the parting is widening, see a dermatologist now rather than at the end of your three months, because in pattern hair loss the available treatment preserves existing hair, and the months spent waiting are months of follicles you do not get back.
What this means for claims
We manufacture hair products, so the commercial consequence is worth stating.
Any product promising visible results in two or four weeks is making a biologically impossible claim. The cycle does not permit it. This is not an exaggeration to discount; it is a claim the biology rules out.
And a product honestly positioned on this timescale is at a marketing disadvantage, “give it three to six months” sells worse than “results in 30 days”. That is precisely why the category is full of the latter.
What is sayable: traditional use of bhringraj, amla and neem in hair care; reduced hair breakage (real, and a conditioning effect); the recognised roles of biotin, zinc, iron and protein in maintaining normal hair.
What is not: regrows hair, stops hair fall, prevents baldness, or results in a stated number of weeks.
The honest framing we use: three months minimum, six months to judge properly, with photographs, and get the blood tests done while you wait.
See a dermatologist
Promptly:
- Patchy hair loss, round smooth patches
- Scaling with hair loss, particularly in a child, possible fungal infection needing oral medication
- Scarring, or a shiny smooth scalp where hair has gone, urgent, because this is permanent
- Scalp pain, burning or pus
- A widening parting, pattern hair loss, where starting early matters
- Sudden very heavy shedding that does not settle
- Hair loss with fatigue, weight change or irregular periods
The short version
- Anagen (growing) lasts years; telogen (resting) about three months. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month.
- A hair shed today entered its resting phase about three months ago, so the cause is usually in the past, not the present.
- Ask what happened two to three months ago, not what changed last week.
- Correcting something now shows in months, not weeks.
- Three months is the minimum to judge; six is better.
- Shedding can increase in the first weeks, expected with minoxidil and after correcting a deficiency, not damage.
- Testimonials are unreliable here because seasonal shedding and telogen effluvium both resolve on their own.
- Take photographs of the parting and hairline in consistent light. Memory is not a comparator.
- Judge density, not the drain. 50–100 hairs a day is normal.
- Check for a bulb, no bulb means breakage, which is a faster fix.
- Look for short new hairs at three to four months, the earliest real sign.
- Do the blood tests while you wait, and stop biotin before them.
- “Results in 30 days” is biologically impossible in this category.
- A widening parting means see a doctor now, not in three months.
