Ek diabetic aadmi “sugar free” biscuit khareedta hai. Packet par bada likha hai: SUGAR FREE. Woh nishchint hoke do-teen biscuit kha leta hai.
Us biscuit mein maida hai, jo lagbhag poora starch hai. Starch aant mein glucose mein todta hai. Blood sugar par asar sugar wale biscuit se khaas kam nahi hota.
Yeh dhokha nahi hai, technically label sahi hai. Par jo customer samajhta hai aur jo label kehta hai, dono mein bada farq hai.
Yeh article us farq ke baare mein hai.
Yeh information hai, medical advice nahi. Diabetes ki dawai ya diet mein badlav doctor ke saath. Yeh article label padhne ke baare mein hai, treatment ke baare mein nahi.
“Sugar free” ka actual matlab
“Sugar free” ka matlab hai: added sugar nahi dala gaya, ya regulatory definition ke mutabik ek bahut chhoti limit se kam.
Iska matlab yeh NAHI hai:
- Carbohydrate nahi hai
- Blood sugar nahi badhega
- Calories nahi hain
- Diabetes mein bezhijhak kha sakte hain
Kyunki sugar carbohydrate ka ek hissa hai, poora carbohydrate nahi. Starch bhi carbohydrate hai, aur starch aant mein tootkar glucose banta hai.
Toh asal sawal “sugar kitna hai” nahi hai, “total carbohydrate kitna hai” hai.
Label par kahan dekhein
Nutrition panel par yeh line dhoondhein:
Carbohydrate, total ......... X g
of which sugars ........... Y g
Jo matter karta hai woh X hai, Y nahi.
Sugar-free biscuit mein: sugars 0.5 g, total carbohydrate 70 g per 100 g. Woh 70 g hi blood sugar par kaam karega.
Ek aur line dhoondhein: fibre.
Fibre carbohydrate mein count hota hai par blood sugar par wahi asar nahi daalta. Toh thoda aur accurate picture:
Total carbohydrate − fibre = woh carbohydrate jo mayne rakhta hai
(Ise kai jagah “net carbs” kehte hain. Yeh ek approximation hai, perfect formula nahi, par sugar wali line dekhne se kaafi behtar hai.)
“Sugar free” ke andar kya hota hai
Jab sugar hataya jaata hai, uski jagah kuch aata hai. Woh kya hai, yeh matter karta hai.
Artificial sweeteners, in sab mein carbohydrate nahi hota
Sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, steviol glycosides (stevia).
Yeh blood sugar par seedha asar nahi daalte. Regulatory bodies ne inhe approved kiya hai aur inke liye acceptable daily intake levels tay hain.
Honest caveats:
- Aspartame phenylketonuria (PKU) wale logon ke liye nahi, label par warning hoti hai
- Gut microbiome aur long-term metabolic effects par research chal rahi hai aur jawab final nahi hai. Kuch observational studies ne questions uthaye hain. Yeh “khatarnak hai” kehna nahi hai; yeh “poora pata nahi hai” kehna hai
- Ek behavioural point: bahut log sugar-free cheez khaakar baad mein zyada kha lete hain, yeh soch kar ki “yeh to free hai”
Sugar alcohols, yahan do baat hai
Sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol, erythritol, isomalt, inke naam “-ol” par khatam hote hain.
Pehli baat: inme calories aur kuch carbohydrate hota hai. Maltitol khaas kar, iska blood sugar par asar kaafi hota hai, aur yeh “sugar free” chocolate aur sweets mein bahut use hota hai. Toh maltitol wala sugar-free chocolate blood sugar par asar daal sakta hai.
Doosri baat: yeh gas, bloating aur loose motion karte hain, matra par depend karta hai. Packet par aksar chhoti warning hoti hai: “excess consumption may have a laxative effect”. Woh warning asli hai.
Erythritol inme se sabse behtar tolerate hota hai aur sabse kam asar daalta hai blood sugar par.
Aur sabse bada, jo cheez badli nahi
Sugar-free biscuit mein maida wahi hai. Sugar-free cake mein maida wahi hai. Sugar-free namkeen mein… woh to sugar-free hi tha.
Yeh poore article ka main point hai. “Sugar free” sirf ek ingredient hataata hai. Baki carbohydrate load wahi rehta hai.
Jo labels par aur dhyaan dena chahiye
“Sugar ke doosre naam”
Agar aap added sugar se bach rahe hain, toh yeh sab sugar hi hain:
Glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, dextrose, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, invert sugar, malt extract, honey, jaggery/gud, khand, molasses, fruit juice concentrate, maltodextrin.
Gud aur honey ke baare mein saaf baat: yeh “natural” hain, aur blood sugar par inka asar cheeni jaisa hi hota hai. Gud mein kuch minerals hote hain, woh matra nutritionally meaningful nahi hai. Diabetes mein gud cheeni ka substitute nahi hai. Yeh India mein sabse aam galatfehmi hai is topic par.
Maltodextrin par ek specific warning: yeh “sugar” ke roop mein declare nahi hota par iska glycaemic effect glucose jitna ya usse zyada ho sakta hai. Yeh bahut se packaged products mein, protein powders aur “health drinks” mein bhi, hota hai.
“No added sugar” vs “sugar free”
“No added sugar”, upar se sugar nahi dala, par naturally maujood sugar ho sakti hai. Fruit juice ka classic case: “no added sugar” wale juice mein fruit ki apni sugar poori hoti hai, aur fibre nikal gaya hota hai.
Toh “no added sugar” fruit juice blood sugar par kaafi asar daalta hai. Fruit khaayein, juice nahi, yeh is category ka sabse useful rule hai.
“Diabetic friendly” aur “sugar control”
Yeh marketing phrases hain, regulatory categories nahi. Inka koi tay matlab nahi hai. Label ka nutrition panel padhein, front ka claim nahi.
“Atta” wale health claims
“Multigrain”, “high fibre atta”, “diabetic atta”, nutrition panel dekhein. Kai products mein maida ka hissa kaafi hota hai, thode se aur grains ke saath.
Ek practical comparison
| Product | Sugar | Total carb | Asli baat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal biscuit | zyada | ~70 g | Dono hi carb load dete hain |
| “Sugar free” biscuit | ~0 | ~70 g | Maida wahi hai |
| “No added sugar” juice | zyada (natural) | zyada | Fibre nikal gaya |
| Sugar-free chocolate (maltitol) | ~0 | kaafi | Maltitol asar daalta hai |
| Diet cold drink | 0 | ~0 | Carb nahi; baaki sawal alag |
| Amrud ya seb | natural | madhyam | Fibre ke saath, behtar |
| Dal + sabzi + roti | kam | madhyam | Protein aur fibre ke saath |
Jo actually kaam karta hai
Label padhna ek tool hai. Jo isse zyada kaam karta hai:
1. Packaged food kam. Jo cheez label nahi maangti, woh usually behtar hai.
2. Har khaane mein protein. Usi meal mein sugar ka spike kam hota hai.
3. Khaane ka kram: pehle sabzi/salad, phir protein, phir carbohydrate. Yeh ek chhota aur genuinely useful trick hai, usi khaane se spike kam hota hai.
4. Fibre. Sabzi, dal, chhilke wale fruit, isabgol.
5. Matra. Yeh sabse zyada matter karta hai aur sabse kam baat hoti hai. Thoda chawal theek hai; do katori chawal alag baat hai.
6. Fruit khaayein, juice nahi.
7. Meethe pey band. Is poore topic mein sabse bada ek badlav.
8. Khaane ke baad 10-15 minute chalna. Yeh post-meal glucose par measurable asar daalta hai aur bilkul muft hai.
9. Apna meter use karein. Agar aapke paas glucometer hai, toh khaane se pehle aur 2 ghante baad check karke dekhein ki kaunsi cheez aap par kya karti hai. Yeh kisi bhi general list se zyada accurate hai, kyunki response individual hota hai.
Supplements ke baare mein, seedhi baat
Hum is category mein manufacture karte hain, toh yeh kehna banta hai.
Karela, jamun, gudmar aur methi ka Ayurveda mein madhumeha sambandhi yogon mein traditional use hai, aur inme se kuch par research bhi hai, khaas kar methi par.
Aur ek important safety point: inka blood-sugar-lowering effect asli ho sakta hai. Agar aap pehle se diabetes ki dawai ya insulin le rahe hain, toh combined effect se hypoglycaemia ho sakti hai. Yeh theoretical nahi hai.
Toh: doctor ko batayein, sugar zyada monitor karein, aur hypoglycaemia ke symptoms jaanein, pasina, kaampna, achaanak bhookh, confusion.
Jo nahi kaha ja sakta: diabetes ka ilaj, sugar control karna, insulin ki zaroorat kam karna, ya dawai chhodna. Yeh medicinal claims hain aur hum aise labels ke liye manufacture nahi karte.
Aur sabse zaroori: koi bhi supplement diabetes ki dawai nahi chhodwata. Jo product yeh suggest kare, woh ek khatarnak cheez bech raha hai. Uncontrolled diabetes se aankh, gurda aur nerve ka nuksan hota hai, aur woh chup-chaap hota hai.
Brand owners ke liye
Agar aap is category mein product banwa rahe hain:
“Sugar free” likhna technically legal ho sakta hai aur phir bhi customer ko galat samajh de sakta hai. Jo brand total carbohydrate per serving aur per piece saaf likhta hai, woh ek category mein alag dikhta hai jahaan zyadatar labels bas front par ek claim lagate hain.
Maltodextrin aur maltitol ko chhupana, technically compliant, practically misleading. Ek diabetic customer jo baad mein pata lagata hai, wapas nahi aata.
Aur “diabetic friendly” ek khaali phrase hai. Usse bharosa nahi banta.
Chhota version
