Protein powder India mein ek badi category hai, aur usme do alag-alag problems hain jo log mila dete hain.
Pehli: counterfeit, ek jaana-maana brand ka nakli tub, jisme kuch bhi ho sakta hai.
Doosri, aur zyada aam: amino spiking, ek asli, legal dikhne wala product jisme protein label se kam hai, aur gap sasti cheezon se bhara gaya hai.
Hum protein powder manufacture karte hain. Yeh article un dono ke baare mein hai, aur imaandaari se, ghar par aap zyada kuch verify nahi kar sakte. Jo kar sakte hain woh neeche hai, aur jo nahi kar sakte woh bhi.
Yeh information hai, medical advice nahi. Kidney disease, liver disease ya pregnancy mein protein supplement doctor se poochh kar.
Amino spiking, yeh samajhna zaroori hai
Yeh is category ka sabse bada aur sabse technical dhokha hai, aur zyadatar customers ko iska naam bhi nahi pata.
Protein content measure karne ka standard tareeka (Kjeldahl method) nitrogen naapta hai, aur usse protein calculate karta hai. Kyunki protein mein nitrogen hota hai.
Problem: free amino acids aur kuch non-protein nitrogen compounds mein bhi nitrogen hota hai. Toh agar koi sasti cheez daal de jisme nitrogen hai, toh test par protein zyada dikhega, jabki asli, complete protein kam hai.
Jo cheezein is tarah daali jaati hain:
- Glycine, taurine, creatine, sasti hain, nitrogen hai, aur muscle protein synthesis ke liye wahi kaam nahi karti
- Maltodextrin aur dextrose, yeh nitrogen nahi badhate, par weight aur volume badha dete hain aur cost ghatate hain
Aur isi liye yeh dhoka itna effective hai: lab test “protein” dikha deta hai, label technically defend ho jaata hai, aur customer ko woh amino acids nahi milte jo matter karte hain.
Jo asal mein matter karta hai woh hai: leucine, aur poora essential amino acid profile. Leucine muscle protein synthesis ka trigger hai. Glycine se woh kaam nahi hota.
Label par jo dekh sakte hain
1. Amino acid profile, aur “spiking” ke signs
Acche products full amino acid profile print karte hain. Usme dekhein:
Leucine kitna hai? Whey mein per 25 g protein mein lagbhag 2.5–3 g leucine hona chahiye. Agar leucine declare nahi hai, ya bahut kam hai, toh sawal uthta hai.
Glycine, taurine ya creatine alag se “added” dikh rahe hain? Agar yeh protein blend ke andar list kiye gaye hain, protein ke hisse ke roop mein, alag se nahi, toh yeh spiking ka classic signal hai.
“Amino acid blend” ya “protein matrix” jaisa phrase, jisme quantities nahi hain, yeh chhupane ka tareeka hai.
2. Serving size ka math karein
Yeh sabse useful ek check hai aur yeh calculator se ho jaata hai.
Scoop size dekhein aur protein per scoop dekhein. Phir ratio nikaalein:
| Protein type | Expected protein % per scoop |
|---|---|
| Whey isolate | ~85–90% |
| Whey concentrate | ~70–80% |
| Blend | 60–80% |
| Plant (pea/rice) | 70–85% |
Udaharan: 33 g scoop, 24 g protein = 73%. Yeh whey concentrate ke liye normal hai.
Red flag: 40 g scoop mein 20 g protein = 50%. Woh baki 20 g kya hai? Usually maltodextrin. Aap carbohydrate ko protein ke daam par khareed rahe hain.
Ek aur: “33 servings” likha hai, 1 kg tub, 30 g scoop → 33 × 30 = 990 g. Theek. Agar numbers match nahi karte, toh label dhyaan se nahi bana.
3. Total carbohydrate aur sugar
Isolate mein carbohydrate bahut kam hona chahiye (1–3 g per serving). Concentrate mein thoda zyada.
Agar 10–15 g carbohydrate hai per serving aur product “isolate” keh raha hai, toh woh isolate nahi hai, ya usme filler hai.
4. Ingredient order
Ingredients weight ke descending order mein likhe jaate hain. Pehla ingredient protein source hona chahiye.
Agar pehla ingredient maltodextrin, sugar, ya cocoa hai, toh product ka bada hissa protein nahi hai.
5. Licence aur regulatory details
- FSSAI licence number label par
- Importer ka naam aur address, agar imported hai
- Batch number, manufacturing date, expiry
- Nutritional panel poora
- Manufacturer ka naam aur address, “Marketed by” ke saath “Manufactured by” bhi
Imported products par: India mein bikne wale imported product par English mein Indian labelling requirements poori honi chahiye, FSSAI number, importer details, aur Indian address. Sirf foreign label wala tub, bina Indian sticker, usually grey market hai.
6. Price ki sanity check
Whey ek commodity hai, uska international price hota hai. Protein sasta nahi ho sakta.
Agar ek 1 kg whey tub market rate se bahut sasta hai, toh kuch to hai. Ya woh nakli hai, ya usme protein kam hai, ya woh expired/near-expiry stock hai.
“Buy 1 get 1 free” offers is category mein khaas tarah se dekhne chahiye.
Counterfeit, packaging ke signs
Yeh alag problem hai: asli brand ka nakli tub.
Jo dekhein:
- Seal, induction seal theek hai? Tampered lagta hai?
- Printing quality, blurry text, galat spelling, colour alag
- Scoop, asli brands ka scoop consistent hota hai; nakli mein aksar generic scoop hota hai
- Batch number, tub par aur seal/label par match karta hai?
- QR ya authentication code, kai brands ne ab yeh add kiya hai. Scan karein, aur brand ki official site par verify karein, kisi third-party link par nahi
- Label ka chipakna, ucha hua, tedha, ya glue dikhe
- Weight, tub ka weight label se bahut kam
Texture aur taste:
- Bahut zyada clumping
- Bahut zyada jhaag mix karne par
- Bahut meetha, sweetener se cheap protein ka taste chhupaya jaata hai
- Ghulne mein problem, chalky, gritty
- Smell galat
Par yahan imaandaari zaroori hai: texture aur taste se kuch sabit nahi hota. Asli product bhi clump karta hai, aur acchi quality ka nakli product bilkul normal taste kar sakta hai. Yeh sirf suggestive hai, proof nahi.
Kahan se khareedein, yeh sabse important hai
Yeh poore article ka sabse practical hissa hai: jahaan se aap khareedte hain, woh label padhne se zyada matter karta hai.
Behtar:
- Brand ki official website
- Brand ka authorised distributor, brand ki site par list hoti hai
- Bade, established retailers jinki accountability hai
Risk zyada:
- Marketplace par third-party sellers, khaas kar bahut discounted. Yahan counterfeit ka sabse zyada risk hai
- Local gym counter jahaan source nahi pata
- Instagram aur WhatsApp sellers
- “Direct import, duty free” wale offers
- Bahut purane ya bahut naye sellers bina reviews ke
Ek practical tip: jab possible ho, brand se directly ya unke authorised channel se. Thoda zyada paisa, par yeh poora risk category hata deta hai.
Jo aap ghar par verify NAHI kar sakte
Yeh kehna zaroori hai, kyunki internet par bahut se “ghar ke test” ghoomte hain:
- Paani mein ghulne ka test, kuch sabit nahi karta
- Aag mein jalaane ka test, kuch sabit nahi karta
- Iodine test (starch ke liye), yeh sirf starch dikhata hai; aur kai legitimate products mein kuch carbohydrate hota hai anyway
- Taste aur smell, suggestive, proof nahi
- Amino spiking, ghar par bilkul detect nahi ho sakta. Iske liye lab chahiye
- Heavy metals, lab
- Microbial contamination, lab
- Banned substances, lab
Toh honest conclusion: ghar par aap counterfeit packaging ke kuch signs pakad sakte hain, aur label ka math kar sakte hain. Contents verify nahi kar sakte. Isi liye source aur third-party testing hi asli protection hai.
Third-party testing, jo serious brands karte hain
Agar aap serious hain is category mein:
Lab test reports, brand se maangein. Protein content, amino acid profile, heavy metals, microbial.
Third-party certification programmes athletes ke liye exist karti hain, jo banned substances ke liye test karti hain. Jo log competitive sport mein hain unke liye yeh matter karta hai, aur dope testing wale athletes ke liye yeh non-negotiable hai.
NABL accredited lab ki report ka weight zyada hota hai.
Aur ek baat jo sabse zyada reveal karti hai: ek brand se poochein ki “aapki latest batch ki COA mil sakti hai?” Jo brand bina hichkichaye de deta hai, woh woh brand hai jo ise regularly karta hai.
Manufacturers ke liye, hamara side
Hum contract manufacture karte hain, toh is problem ka doosra pehlu bhi dekhte hain.
Jo clients maangte hain aur hum decline karte hain:
- “Protein 24 g dikhana hai, par cost X rakhni hai”, jab woh math possible nahi hai, toh woh request effectively spiking ki request hai
- Amino acids ko protein count mein shaamil karna
- “Isolate” likhna jab blend hai
- Serving size aise set karna ki numbers achhe dikhein par scoop realistic na ho
Jo hum zaroori maante hain:
- Protein content, Kjeldahl ke saath amino acid profile bhi
- Leucine declared
- Heavy metals batch-wise, plant proteins mein yeh khaas kar matter karta hai, kyunki pea aur rice protein mein soil se heavy metals aane ka documented issue hai
- Microbial testing
- Honest serving size
Plant protein par ek specific note: rice protein mein arsenic aur pea protein mein heavy metals ke concerns documented hain. Agar aap plant protein banwa rahe hain, heavy metal testing optional nahi hai.
Chhota version
Do alag problems hain: counterfeit (nakli tub) aur amino spiking (asli dikhne wala product, kam protein).
Amino spiking: nitrogen test se protein naapa jaata hai, toh sasti nitrogen wali cheezein (glycine, taurine) daal kar number badhaya jaata hai. Leucine dekhein, 25 g protein mein ~2.5–3 g.
Label ka math karein: protein ÷ scoop size. Whey isolate ~85–90%, concentrate ~70–80%. 50% wala product carbohydrate hai jo protein ke daam par bik raha hai.
Pehla ingredient protein hona chahiye. Maltodextrin pehle ho toh samajh jaayein.
Price commodity price se bahut kam ho toh kuch hai.
Ghar ke test (paani, aag, iodine) se kuch sabit nahi hota. Amino spiking ghar par detect nahi ho sakti.
Isliye sabse asli protection: brand ke official ya authorised channel se khareedna, aur COA maangna. Jo brand COA de deta hai, woh woh brand hai jo testing karta hai.
Products: whey protein powder aur plant protein powder. COA padhne par detail: reading a certificate of analysis.
