Traditional use
A medhya rasayana, a herb for the intellect, used in classical formulations for memory, concentration and mental clarity, and traditionally given to students.
Why brands use it
Substantial search volume in both languages, with clear exam-season peaks before board exams in February and March and again ahead of competitive entrances. Parents buying for students are a distinct second audience with distinct messaging.
Quality and specification
Standardised to bacoside content, commonly 20%. Note the naming confusion: in parts of India "brahmi" refers to gotu kola (Centella asiatica), a different plant. Stating the botanical name avoids the ambiguity.
Safety and cautions
Generally well tolerated; some people report mild digestive upset when taken on an empty stomach. Research generally examines effects over eight to twelve weeks, so honest expectation-setting matters.
