Manjistha

Rubia cordifolia

The classical blood-purifier herb, and the backbone of Ayurvedic skin formulations.

Also known as: Indian madder, मंजिष्ठा

Traditional use

Root used in classical raktashodhak formulations, those concerned with purifying the blood, and consistently associated with skin health.

Why brands use it

Valuable because it lets a single formulation speak to two audiences: an older customer who understands blood purification, and a younger one buying for skin clarity. Beauty-from-within is one of the fastest-growing categories in India, and manjistha is its classical anchor.

Quality and specification

Root material. Adulteration with related species occurs.

Safety and cautions

Generally well tolerated. Not advised in pregnancy. May colour the urine, which is harmless but worth noting on the label.

Questions we actually get

Before you ask us

Skin or detox positioning?

Both work, to different audiences, on the same formulation. That dual use is precisely why it is such a useful ingredient.
