Traditional use
Root used widely in classical formulations, for throat and respiratory comfort, for stomach comfort, and in skin preparations. Naturally sweet, which makes it useful in otherwise bitter formulations.
Why brands use it
Unusually versatile: it appears in respiratory, digestive, paediatric and skin products across this catalogue. Its liquorice extract is also an established cosmetic brightening active, which bridges traditional and modern skincare positioning.
Quality and specification
Root material. Glycyrrhizin content is the usual marker. Deglycyrrhizinated extract is available where the blood-pressure concern matters.
Safety and cautions
Important caution: prolonged or high intake of glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Not advised in pregnancy or for anyone with hypertension. This is one of the few herbs here where dose discipline genuinely matters.
